"the forest"

Overton & McCann are an Edinburgh-based duo who write and perform original songs featuring close vocal harmonies, piano, acoustic guitar and a dash of atmospheric trumpet. It's a distinctive sound that blurs genres while keeping a folk essence.

Gareth Overton grew up in Yorkshire immersed in the vibrant culture of brass bands.

Lorraine McCann, from Dundee, started out playing bass on a ferry from Aberdeen to Shetland.

Band bio: The duo came together in late 2018 to perform folk and Americana covers, but soon began to develop original material. The pandemic forced a hiatus, but in spring of 2023 a debut EP titled “Overton & McCann” was released. Soon after, Overton & McCann reached the semi-finals of Brewhemia's Neu Muzik talent search. The pair have ever since enjoyed a warm welcome playing at folk clubs, house concerts and small festivals.

Songwriting: In January 2026 Gareth’s “Getting Over Going Under” won the inaugural Wild Song songwriting challenge. In 2025 Edinburgh Folk Club gave him first place for “It’s All Happening Tonight” in their annual songwriting competition, Lorraine's song “Not The End Of The World” having been runner-up the year before. Gareth's “Can We Do It All Again?” was also longlisted for the global Talent Is Timeless competition in 2024.

What to expect: Mindful reflections on universal subjects. Occasionally dark, more often soothing, Overton & McCann bring a warm, storytelling presence to listening rooms that enjoy something a little different.

New music: A second EP titled “The Forest” will be released on 18 September 2026.
